I DJ Lucha VaVoom: Authentic Mexican Wrestling Mixed With Burlesque Performers

Aside from DJing weddings, I DJ other events as well, such as movie premiers, corporate events, as well as any party that could use assistance with the right music played at the right moment. One of my all time favorite events, is Lucha Va Voom which involves Mexican Masked Wrestling + Burlesque + Comedy. The show’s website describes “Lucha VaVOOM as a non-stop, action-packed scream-a-thon, where Mexican Masked wrestlers flip and fly, performing breathtaking acrobatic feats. It’s good vs. evil played out in a one fall, Lucha Libre exhibition-style match for maximum enjoyment. In between matches, the finest, handpicked burlesque acts from around the world astound us; at Lucha VaVOOM, we like a little sexo with our violencia. Raucous aerial acts, Pogo-stick peelers, hula-hoop hotties; we’ve got it all. But wait there’s more! Our color commentary is handled by comedians Tom Kenny, Dana Gould and Blaine Capatch. Other guest commentators include Fred Armisen, Brian Poussein, Patton Oswalt, Jeffrey Ross, Chris Hardwick and Bobcat Goldthwait. Even Jack Black sat in.”
What makes the show so fun and challenging is that each wrestler has his or her own theme song that I play during their entrance and throughout the match. Each match is different so, I have to watch very closely and play a snippet of the theme song at just the right moment. I play the theme song either for dramatic effect as an exclamation point after a wrestler does a particularly great move. The music also acts as a way to inspire the crowds to clap and cheer the Técnicos, aka the good guys. Lucha VaVoom matches are tag teams or trios so I have to have typically, 4 different theme songs ready to play at any second. One of the most popular teams is The Crazy Chickens and the mini, phenomenon Lil Chicken. These Chickens really do fly into and out of the ring.
Lil Chicken is an incredibly agile
and strong athlete, as evident in this picture.
The dancers are fantastic and their props and costumes are incredible as well. It is really hard to describe in words the full impact of the entire show. The comedians who act as commentators for the matches have such razor sharp wits and tongues, they give the show that extra something. Before and after the shows I play Spanish language versions of American and British songs from the 1960’s and 70’s. I also play Latin Soul and Boogaloo music, which was made popular in New York in the mid 60’s to the mid 70’s.

I know that Thanksgiving was several months ago, yet I am still thinking about all that makes me truly thankful. I am so fortunate to have a wonderful wife and a loving and supportive family. I am also very thankful to have a profession, wedding reception DJ, in which I am so intimately involved with an event that is so significant to a couple and their family and friends.
After working with a bride a groom for an extended period of time, it is hard to express how personally gratifying it is to see them enjoy their wedding in its entirety. There are so many moments that are significant for a bride and groom. The exchanging of their vows, their first dance, the toasts from their family and friends, and finally seeing them leap up out of their seats or away from a conversation when they hear a particularly favorite song are a few that stand out.
It is pretty obvious to anyone watching all of these events when a bride and groom are particularly happy. I am especially grateful and thankful when a bride and or a groom express their happiness in a thank you card and or a review.

I had the pleasure of Djing Liz and Roy Hemphill’s west coast wedding reception at the ever stunning Huron Sub Station. I was introduced to the happy couple by the owner of Huron Sub Station, Meike Kopp. I had previously spun at a few events there and Meike recommends me as one of her preferred wedding DJ’s.
I am truly honored because Meike’s venue is a very popular event space and she has worked with tons of wedding reception Dj’s over the years. I first met with Liz and Roy at a pizza place near their home in Echo Park. They are both big music fans and after meeting for just a few minutes, it was clear that we were a good match. Within a week, they sent me back their play list. Typically, most couples send me their play list a week prior to their wedding date. Liz and Roy sent me their preliminary list more than two months in advance.
Liz and Roy had a wedding reception on the East Coast prior to their celebratory party in Los Angeles, so their event on Saturday was much more casual. They still retained a few traditional elements such as a number of toasts and a first dance. Joe of Tact Events was the onsite coordinator for the evening. He helped maintain the flow of the event and was very quick to assist me and or answer any question that I had during the course of the evening.
Their photographer, Megan Welker, covered the room effortlessly and was a joy to work with. The catering was handled by the The Grilled Cheese Truck, and honestly the grilled cheese with mac and cheese, pulled pork, and caramelized onion sandwich was stupendous. I washed it down with one of Roy’s favorite drinks, Moxie Soda.
All of the toasts went well and when it came for their first dance, Liz had a surprise for her husband. One of Roy’s dearest friends, Carlos is an incredible singer and guitar player. Liz arranged to have him perform “We’ve Got Tonight” by Bob Seger. Bob Seger is one of Roy’s father’s favorite performers, so it was a nice tribute all the way around. I have to say that Liz and Roy’s friends and family really love to dance. Once the dancing portion began, the floor was packed until the end of the last song.
Their play list included everything from Michael Jackson, Elton John, Prince, and The Beastie Boys to some contemporary artists like LMFAO. They didn’t give me a “Do Not Play List” so when one of their guests asked me to play Journey; I asked Roy “…What is your Journey Policy?” He laughed and said it was fine to play them. There are certain bands or artists who can stir up strong feelings on the pro and con side of things. I find Journey to be one of these bands. Of course, when I put on “Don’t Stop Believing”, the crowd went nuts.
When it came to the last song, I picked “Somebody To Love” by Queen from their play list. Roy and Liz began dancing and all of their friends surrounded and circled them and Megan ran up the stairs to get an overhead shot, which I will add to the blog as soon as the pictures are published. This was the perfect song to cap a perfect night. It was a pleasure to be a part of their special day and I look forward to seeing Liz and Roy in the near future.

Unfortunately, wedding DJs do cancel at the last minute.
